South African women have always taken pride in their traditional attires. Some attires have been more popular than others, but it seems like, more women are opting for traditional attires for their weddings and other traditional ceremonies. The garments, from all different tribes in South Africa and across the continent, are not only beautiful but they have a rich history and form part of our rich heritage.

The country celebrates heritage month in September every year and this is where you’ll see, South Africans, at their truest form giving you nothing but their best while teaching you a thing or two about their values. We've seen ordinary people and celebrities such as Makhadzi rocking the attires for heritage day in the country.

These beautiful garments are often hard to find and many choose to have them designed. They definitely do not come cheap but they are worth every cent. Everyone should have one or two attires in their wardrobe and we’ve come up with a list of companies/brands that are selling these beautiful garments where you won’t go too deep in your pocket.

The Wild Coast Trading Company
This company sources handmade products including traditional Xhosa clothing, jewelry, natural beauty products, wire craft, home decor, and pottery directly from crafters and artists that are mostly based in the Wild Coast area of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. They showcase products by different artists in one convenient online store/market place and that helps clients to choose from a variety of products.

Ledikana Africa
Based in Johannesburg, this is a South African fashion and accessories brand that specialises in the manufacturing of contemporary African garments, hats, and other fashion accessories. The products are locally made and culturally inspired.

“We empower and help develop the skills of women across South Africa, mostly sole breadwinners and pensioners from the rural areas of Mpumalanga, Kwa -Zulu Natal, Eastern Cape and Gauteng.”

Amina Designs SA
For brides and grooms accessories, beaded and painted earrings, purses, shoes and hand watches, Amina Designs SA is your home. They are a retailer of a wide range of African painted and beadwork handmade products that produce high-quality products created by crafters from disadvantaged communities.

Haute Afrika
This is an award-winning contemporary African print clothing brand. Their clothes are made with love for people who are stylish and take pride in their roots. This is a perfect place to get elegant traditional matching outfits for you and yours!

Urban Zulu
Urban Zulu specialises in ready-to-wear clothing, bespoke clothing and accessory designs. They pride themselves in originality, based on existing trends, and our distinct design style.

“Unlike local commercial brands which take their direction from Europe and abroad, we use locally available material and include African materials and prints as African culture is what we breathe. At the same time, we take direction from the streets of Jozi and the entire continent.”

Whether it’s beads, bags, hats, or dresses that you’re looking for, these are some of the brands that will pull through for you and your family! Go out there and show the world what Africa is is capable of. And while at it, support local artists behind this incredible work.
