Coconut, Shea, Argan, Sweet Almond, Jojoba, these are all popular ingredients in natural hair products because they contain essential nutrients, and you’ll see them popping up again and again in your favourite hair blogger’s feed.

But there are two other ingredients that are less well known but are beginning to appear more and more in natural hair circles and on naturalista’s lists of favourite oils and butters. This Africa Day, we're taking a look at these two secret ingredients from the Motherland.

Mango Butter

This natural butter is made from mango seeds. The butter is extracted from the kernel, which is the inner part of the seed. The butter is off white and has a creamy texture and has a light fragrance – not too overpowering. It is added to many natural hair products because it is non-greasy and doesn’t weigh your hair down.

Why It's Amazing

Mango butter is great for your hair because it can easily penetrate the cuticle and lock in that moisture to keep your hair looking healthy and shiny. It contains vitamins A and E as well as antioxidants which make your hair stronger and less prone to breakage. A good shampoo or co-wash that contains mango butter will add some bonus moisture to your hair.  If used regularly, and followed with a deep conditioner, the result will be soft hair, reduced split ends and less frizz.

Marula oil

The oil is extracted from the nuts of the fruits of the marula tree, which is indigenous to Africa. The light yellow oil is known for being light weight and easily absorbed. It has a natural fruity kind of scent and you’ll find it as an ingredient in everything from soaps to perfumes to massage oils.

Why It Belongs In Your Ingredient List

Unlike thicker oils which are not easily absorbed, marula oil soaks easily into the hair without leaving any greasy pillow stains and it also conditions your hair for easy combing and detangling. It is the perfect ingredient to be included in a leave-in conditioner because it is rich in vitamin E and C which nourish and add moisture to your hair. The addition of a creamy styling butter containing marula oil will give your hair maximum moisture and shine all day without grease or excess build-up.

To celebrate Africa Day and the beauty of our natural hair, Girlboss and YAZA are giving away two hair care hampers from their Mango and Marula natural hair product range.
